Rising Cancer Diagnoses Among Young Adults and Teens in Singapore

Recent health data from the Singapore Cancer Registry shows a notable increase in cancer cases among young people, a trend that is drawing concern from healthcare professionals and public health advocates.

Between 2019 and 2023, there were 4,995 cancer diagnoses among people under 40 years old in Singapore, a 34 % increase from the 3,729 cases recorded in the period between 2003 and 2007.

While cancer remains more common in older adults, the data indicates that younger age groups are experiencing a faster rise in age-specific cancer incidence compared with older populations, according to experts familiar with the Cancer Registry’s latest report.

Specialists note that this trend underscores the importance of awareness, early detection and lifestyle measures that may help reduce risk, such as maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity and reducing consumption of ultra-processed foods, all of which are recognised protective factors in cancer prevention.

“While cancer is still more common in older adults, the younger age groups are seeing faster rises in age-specific incidence compared with older adults,” said a consultant with the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore.

Key Takeaways

Significant rise: 4,995 cases under 40 recorded between 2019–2023, up 34 % from earlier periods.  Health implications: The trend highlights the need for greater awareness of cancer symptoms and the value of early detection. Protective behaviours: Healthy lifestyle factors such as exercise and diet are associated with lower cancer risk in research.

Why This Matters

Health professionals emphasise that cancer in younger adults can be particularly challenging because signs may be subtle or dismissed as benign. Earlier detection usually improves treatment outcomes and emerging trends in younger populations suggest a need for enhanced education and proactive health screening strategies.
